What they didn’t tell you about online business.

Customizing any wordpress theme for Free

No Wordpress theme is perfect. Whoever has tried using any wordpress theme, whether paid or free, will surely know that no theme was really built for his or her application. Themes will always leave things to desire for. Even if you buy so called premium wordpress themes.

There are many paid and free wordpress themes out there, and there is sure to be one that suits you. But as soon as you install your theme, you begin to wonder ….

Can I change the size and color of my post titles? What about changing the font face itself?
How can I change the header graphics of the theme and deal with consequent header size issues?
How do I add a small form in the sidebar so that I can take users’ email id for sending them a free report and regular updates?
I don’t like the column width of my wordpress theme. How can I change these?
How can I add rss feeds from other content rich sites as posts on my site? (OR how do I get legal content for free!!!)
How do I enable my readers to share my posts with others via email and other social networking sites?
I don’t like the way my theme handles and displays images within posts. I would rather have more padding around the images and also a light blue thin line around it.

As trainers, these and some others are the most common questions we hear from people wanting to setup an online business based on wordpress.

Video Tutorials to help you customize your theme even if you are not a coding geek

customize any wordpress theme without having to be a geek

For coders, tweaking a wordpress theme is probably as easy or as enjoyable as watching Tarantino’s latest flick. But it can be quite a challenge for non-coders/non-geeks. It’s designed for non-coders, so there are plenty of practical tips and shortcuts without elaborate theory. So if you want to change the color or size of your post title font, or your background color, or your column width, it will tell you precisely where and how these changes have to be made.

Some of the tasks that the video addresses are:

Changing a header graphic

  2. Willy Said,

Finding a theme that works for you can be quite frustrating and people sifting through the hundreds of themes can vouch for me. I have used these tutorials and I wonder why I spent all those hours trying to search for the perfect theme. I could have just downloaded any theme that was close enough and then applied the techniques in these tutorials to get precisely what I wanted.

  3. moonboy Said,

If you think finding the perfect theme is frustrating then wait till you try to get a coder to build a custom theme for you. It is pure hell to get a programmer to understand what you want.

  4. ladyluck Said,

What do you guys mean by a perfect theme? Nothing is perfect in this world so why expect your theme to be perfect? Why do you need to modify a theme? I have used many themes for quite a while now for blogging and I have been able to blog without any problems with my theme. Don’t look for perfection and you will be all right.

Of course I would like to display some text on my home page only. Just above my posts and below the header. Of course it would be wonderful to increase the font size and make the background color a little lighter. But if i am not able to do that it does not stop me from blogging!!! That’s the spirit of blogging.

  5. Mike Said,

I am with ladyluck. Don’t try to fix it if it ain’t broke. It’s easy to go crazy browsing through the thousands of themes and ultimately pick up the wrong one out of frustration. Is it only me or has this happened to others too?

  6. ladyluck Said,

    Thanks Mike.

  7. admin Said,

    Hi All
@ Lady Luck - Nothing might be perfect but the degree of acceptability largely depends on what you are trying to do. If you are creating content about your cats and expect only your friends to come and view it you mights not want too much from your theme but believe me there are many many cases where you do need to control the look and functionality of the site or blog to a much greter degree. Where the lack of such control can mean failure!!

BTW if you need to really place some text that appears only on your home page just let me know at bizkhan@bingness.com I can help you out.

  8. ladyluck Said,

Thanks Biz. I don’t blog about cats and I advertise on google for getting visitors on my site, so you can be sure that I blog about serious stuff.

Can you let me know how to include a welcome note and my intro only on my home page just above the posts area and below my header? I don’t want this intro to come on every page - just the home page. This will do my blog some good.

Also it would be useful to collect emails from my blog visitors in return for some free information. I want to send a series of emails with useful information to these email addresses once every week automatically for four weeks.

    Thanks

  9. Biz Khan Said,

@ladyluck - Both your tasks can be easily accomplished without hiring any coder .

Since you have not bought my video tutorials you will have to read and follow written instructions :)

I have sent a detailed email to you describing how you can very easily and quickly do both these tasks. Please feel free to ask if you need any further assistance.

  10. ladyluck Said,

Thanks. I was able to implement the changes to my blogs. It has made a big difference. I guess I was being lazy earlier. I have bought the video tutorials today since there were some more things i needed to change in my theme.

    Thanks again.

  18. Steveorevo Said,

ThemeDreamer for WordPress is a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) extension for Adobe Dreamweaver that allows you to edit WordPress theme files with less headache than a plain ‘ol text editor.

    http://www.themedreamer.com/

It also provides links into WordPress’s online reference manual to take the guess work out of template tags.

  19. Biz Khan Said,

For all those programmers and designers who know their way around dreamweaver and have already purchased dreamweaver - you can look at steveorevo’s product too. It does only css edits (changing the look), so you can’t really expect to add or change features and functions in themes using this tool. Correct me if I am wrong here steveorevo.

Nonetheless you must give it a look as it might prove to be just right for dreamweaver users who are looking to make cosmetic changes to their themes.

  20. Steveorevo Said,

It does provide programmers with code hints that go beyond just template tags to help developers make more complete functionality and feature changes. You are correct in that most modifications are aesthetic. Additionally it can help you navigate and point out template tag features. For instance, if you wanted to change blogroll order to descending or ascending, or limit the list to just 2 items, ThemeDreamer will emulate those modifications in DW’s Design View as well as point you to the documentation about the wp_list_bookmarks tag. It really comes in handy just to point out what template_tags do what, so you can drag and drop or delete a tag entirely. Want to move the post date to the bottom, or remove the authors name entirely from posts in a given page template? Just highlight it and press delete. These things may not be done in just CSS alone as some changes require modifications to the tag parameters themselves. ;)

  21. Biz Khan Said,

Thanks for the update on your product steveorevo. For all those who could not follow what steveorevo said or what themedreamer site says - you need the video tutorials before you think of buying themedreamer :-)

For more advanced dreamweaver users - you could evaluate themedreamer and you don’t need my tutorials. The video tutorials are targeted at non coders who are yet to understand theme structures and technology. And it walks you through everything assuming that you don’t understand what a header.php really is. It teaches you to make changes to the look of the theme as well as prepares you to alter the functionality of themes such as adding opt-in features, Home page welcome notes, using rss features for your themes, etc.

I am not saying that themedreamer is not useful. It’s just for a different crowd.

  22. Randie Said,

Do you have a sample video clip I can check out to see if I like the product enough to buy it? Thanx. — Randie

  23. Biz Khan Said,

@Randie – We feel that it is difficult or impossible to judge a tutorial video by watching clips that are not in context. The 75+ minutes of tutorials are designed to take users through a certain process of learning. If the clips are seen out of context then they may make little or no sense.

But your query is very valid. We will talk to our post production department and see if we can make a ‘trailer’/’preview’ of the tutorial video that shows selected clips, along with some voiceover and text, that fills up the gaps so that they don’t seem to be out of context. This may take quite a while to execute, and meanwhile we have offered two solutions:

    1. If there are any points in the tutorial that you don’t understand fully or if there is any theme that you would like to customize but can’t do it, even after you have watched the video, then we can solve your specific queries by email. See details here:
    http://www.bingness.com/12/wordpress-services/90-day-free-email-support-for-wordpress-theme-customization-video-customers/

    2. Buy the videos now and ask for a refund if you don’t like what you get. See our refund policy here:
    http://www.bingness.com/refund-policy/

    Hope that helps.

  24. Javal Shyara Said,

Hey I am also interested in sample video clip if you can provide. Thanks,

  26. SandyK Said,

While I agree with biz khan on not being to give clips, I don’t agree with him on creating previews or trailers. Whoever has heard about trailers for tutorials!!

I say this as a user of the tutorials. I have used the product and have found it to be very thorough and informative. I have learnt a lot. It’s not that I couldn’t have learnt all this somewhere else. Maybe I could have browsed through a couple of dozen sites that have fragmented information all mixed up with code. But this tutorial has presented all that information in an easy to watch informative and illustrated video. I could actually see how the themes were modified by an expert and learn from it.

As someone who has seen the full videos, if someone were to ask me for sample clips I wouldn’t know which ones to give as samples. It wouldn’t make sense and one could hardly judge it’s efficacy!! Clips won’t help as samples. But nor will a trailer!! Find some other way biz.

  27. viper Said,

    Your tutorials totally rock!!!

  28. Biz Khan Said,

Thanks Viper. Also many thanks to all those who send us their wonderful comments by email. Your comments are very encouraging and we will strive to make the product even better and more helpful by providing add-ons.

We are happy that the product is helping so many people to use wordpress themes in a better way. We have included some of your email comments in the post. Thanks again.

  29. gavin steele Said,

Hi there, I am just about to buy the videos…… I’ll give it all a go and then write a review on my new Blog! lol

  30. Victor F. Rodriguez Said,

I bought the video and I read something that you can help me for some hours for doing this.
I changed the theme of my wordpress for another one and now the sidebar does not show what i had before. Can you tell me how to fix that?

  31. Biz Khan Said,

    @Victor

Since I do not know which theme you were using and which theme you switched to I will take a guess.

You have probably switched to a theme that does not support widgets. In that case your earlier widgets on the sidebar will have to be redone. Or better still you can switch to a widget enabled theme. To see if your theme supports widgets on the sidebar just check out the ‘widgets’ menu under ‘Design’ after logging in as administrator on your wordpress admin site.

If this was not helpful or if you need additional help you can send me an email at bizkhan@bingness.com with details of your site url, details of theme used earlier and current theme and the nature of the sidebar content that has vanished.

This info will enable me to pinpoint the exact problem and offer you better support.
